What to Wear and Bring to Your First Tai Chi Class on the Gold Coast

    By Chongwi Group · 6 October 2026

You have found a Tai Chi class you would like to try, but there is one practical question left: what should you wear?

It is easy to overthink your first visit, especially if you have seen photographs of experienced practitioners wearing traditional uniforms. Before buying anything, ask the class organiser what is required. You may already have suitable clothing in your wardrobe.

If you are preparing to join our local Tai Chi classes on the Gold Coast, this guide will help you know what to check and how to arrive ready to learn.

Choose clothing that lets you move comfortably

Tai Chi practice involves movements such as stepping, turning, shifting your weight and raising your arms. Your clothing should allow you to explore those movements without pulling, restricting you or needing constant adjustment.

A comfortable T-shirt or breathable top with flexible trousers is a practical starting point, subject to your instructor's guidance. Check that you can bend your knees and lift your arms without the fabric feeling tight.

Extremely loose or long clothing can also get in the way. Trouser hems should stay clear of your feet, and sleeves should leave your hands free.

    Check the footwear requirements

Ask the instructor which footwear is suitable for the venue and the type of practice. Grass, outdoor paving and indoor floors are different surfaces, so do not assume that advice for one class applies to another.

Well-fitting, secure footwear matters more than buying something marketed specifically for Tai Chi. Check whether the class recommends flat shoes and whether there are any requirements for indoor use.

Avoid arriving in loose slides or thongs unless you have been specifically told they are appropriate. If you normally use particular footwear for a personal requirement, mention this when enquiring.

Do you need a Tai Chi uniform?

Traditional Tai Chi clothing is recognisable, but seeing it in a photograph does not tell you what a particular class requires.

Some groups have their own clothing preferences or uniform arrangements. Others use everyday exercise clothing. Ask before spending money on an outfit, especially if you are still deciding whether to continue.

Your first step is finding out what the class actually expects, rather than trying to look like an experienced practitioner on day one.

    Prepare for the setting

For an outdoor Gold Coast class, check the forecast and ask whether the practice area is shaded. Bring appropriate sun protection and find out what happens if the weather changes.

A light layer can be useful when travelling to an early session or waiting for the class to begin. Choose something easy to remove and keep with your belongings.

For an indoor class, confirm the entrance and any footwear rules. Knowing where to go makes it easier to arrive without rushing.

    Pack a few simple essentials

Before leaving home, check whether you need to bring:

    • A water bottle.
    • Any booking confirmation or payment requested by the organiser.
    • A light layer appropriate to the conditions.
    • Sun protection if the class is outdoors.
    • Any equipment specifically requested by the instructor.

Do not assume that you need a yoga mat, weights or specialist training equipment. Ask what the session uses and whether anything is provided.

Keep valuables and other belongings to a minimum, and check where you can leave your bag during practice.

Give yourself time to settle in

Arriving a little early gives you time to find the group, introduce yourself and ask any final questions. Let the instructor know it is your first session, even if you mentioned this when booking.

If you have movement limitations or access requirements, discuss these in advance where possible. That gives you both an opportunity to clarify the class format before the session starts.

Once you are there, you can concentrate on listening and learning. You do not need to remember every movement immediately or make everything look polished.

Ask us about your first class

Preparing for Tai Chi should be straightforward. A quick conversation can answer questions about clothing, footwear, the venue and what to bring.
